File Scavenger ia an undelete and data recovery utility for Windows XP, Windows 7, Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows 2000, Windows NT and Windows ME/98/95. File Scavenger supports both basic and dynamic disks, NTFS compression, alternate data streams, sparse files, unicode filenames and more.
Strengths of File Scavenger:
- Handles problems with corrupt disk.
- Reloads reformatted or deleted volumes and partitions.
- Partially damaged disk with bad spots can be recovered Broken RAID or spanned volumes can also be dealt with.
- Restores files deleted from the Recycle Bin.
- It has support for compressed and very large data volumes.
- Other areas of recovery include network share, Windows Explorer, reformatted drives, a DOS command window and more.
It can be installed on a hard drive or run from a portable storage device such as a memory stick, removable drive, CD or floppy disk.
Two restrictions that must be noted are:
- To run File Scavenger, you must log on as a system administrator to the computer where data recovery is intended.
- Recovery should be attempted before the files are permanently overwritten by new data.
The Good Aspects:
- Can find lost data in most scenarios.
- Runs quite fast.
- Scans very large disks containing up to 10 million files.
- Support FAT and FAT32 volumes.
- It has a very streamlined interface.
- There are new commands to save and reload a session to avoid having to rescan a disk.
- In severe cases, both the file and the folder path leading to the file can be recovered.
All attempts to recover data must be made before any new data have replaced those memory locations.
